Ruffed Grouse II Newborn Chick

How amazing are the deeds of the LORD! All who delight in Him should ponder them. Everything He does reveals His glory and majesty. His righteousness never fails. Psalm 111:2-3 NLT

Not long ago I posted a short write-up about the Ruffed Grouse (see Ruffed Grouse and Springtime in the Mountains). I wrote about the drumming ritual which the male grouse performs to attract a female at the onset of nesting season.

On an early summer hike, Cosmos the Wonderdog showed me this tiny grouse hidden amongst the fir needles and new plant growth. The chick was probably just a few days old, and remained as still as a stone as I snapped a quick photo. Then Cosmos and I made a fast exit to allow for the young bird to reunite with its mother.

These newborn birds need lots of protein to aid them in rapid development. At this stage of life, the young grouse eat lots of insects, spiders, worms, flies (yay!), grubs, etc. to provide that protein. After about four months, the grouse will be almost full-grown, and its diet will have shifted to plant life – such as fir needles, aspen twigs, and berries. And that is a very good thing, because the weather is turning cold by then in the mountains where I live. There may even be snow on the ground by that time, and the grouse’s source of insect protein will be greatly diminished or almost non-existent.

In colder climates, many animals being born in the springtime is not a chance event. The intelligent design behind this timing, along with a myriad of other events in the wild, is astounding. As the above Scripture says, how amazing are His deeds, indeed! Everything He does reveals His glory. Intelligent design points to an Intelligent Designer. What an Amazing Creator behind all of this.
