Night Sky

Unto You I lift up my eyes, O You who dwell in the heavens. – Psalm 123:1

I lift up my eyes to the mountains–where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. – Psalm 121:1-2 NIV

Who is like the LORD our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth? – Psalm 113:5-6 NIV

Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name. Because of his great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing. – Isaiah 40:26 NLT

He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds. He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name. Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite. – Psalm 147:3-5

For this is what the high and exalted One says–he who lives forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite. – Isaiah 57:15 NIV

Nighttime skies have always captivated me. The number of stars seems to just go on and on, along with an occasional shooting-star burning a green or white trail across the velvety black sky. Add to that the myriad of night sounds in the wilderness, and I almost always gain a renewed sense of awe at the One Who created all this.

Although the estimated number of stars we can see with the naked eye on a clear night varies greatly, I think the general consensus is about 1000-2000. Of course, a lot depends on the weather, and how far away we are from any type of light pollution.

Not long ago as I was photographing the night sky in the wilderness, a rather large animal crashed through the brush not far from where Cosmos the Wonderdog and I were standing. I never did see it, but I certainly did hear it. It sounded so large that I reckon it was either an elk or a bear… or maybe a moose. And I’d imagine Cosmos knew what it was just by his keen sense of smell, but he never did tell me. He probably just didn’t want to scare me any more than I already was!

The above Scriptures speak of not only the awesomeness of God, but also of His desire to be near to those of us who are humble before Him. That aspect of God is nothing short of remarkable to me – One so glorious and powerful and pure and holy actually wants to be close to us, to be with us.

If you are not sure how this very relationship can be yours, I encourage you to see Got God?

Hope you have a wonderful day.
