Log Cabin I

Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the LORD protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good. Psalm 127:1 NLT

Several years ago whilst hiking the mountains I found this old cabin. I was in the same area this spring and the walls are still standing. Someone was quite skilled at putting one of these things together. About a mile away from here I came across another cabin, probably of the same era, and perhaps the closest neighbor to the folks living here. The second cabin didn’t fare as well, and if you don’t know where to look, it would be easy to hike past it.

I am amazed at the tenacity of folks who could make a home out in the rugged mountains in years gone by. This place gets a lot of snow. I’d mentioned in an earlier post that often when I find places like this I like to step back and try to imagine what life here must have been like when this cabin was new. I picture a young family starting out to make a livelihood off the land. Although today this place has a great deal of wildlife nearby, I’d imagine it was even more plentiful back then. More game animals, and probably more big predators around as well. In fact I have a good bear picture from a short distance away that I may post one of these days.

The nearest flowing water is a long hike down the mountain from this cabin. It would take me at least an hour to hike down and back, and that’s not carrying much water. There are a few very small seeps not too far away. Perhaps they had some kind of spring-box or rain catchment system set up. One thing I’ve learned in my many travels is that I can go a long time without a lot of things, but good clean water is not one of them.

The above Scripture speaks of the benefits of dedicating the work of our hands to the Lord. And also to the folly of trying to do things our own way without seeking Him for guidance. I’ve found this to be true in my life and trust you have as well.

Hope you have a great day.
