Daylily

Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. Psalm 90:12 NLT

Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. Hebrews 9:27-28 NIV

A few years back we planted a variety of flowers to add some color to our backyard. I didn’t know much about the things at the time, so I just bought bulbs which were on sale and stuck them in the ground.

Daylilies, despite the name, are not actually lilies. They are in the genus Hemerocallis, whilst a true lily is in the genus Lilium. (All I know for sure is that deer like to chew on these flowers – thus the fence in the picture).

One particular bulb grew and produced a plant bearing a pretty cool looking blossom (see above photo). My wife was away at the time, so I took a picture lest I forget about it. The next day I was a bit astonished to find that the blossom was, as they say in Kenya, “somehow finished.”

As many of you probably know, and as the name Daylily implies, the flowers on these plants only blossom one day per year. Just one day. I never knew that.

When I think of the effort and energy that went into producing such an intricate flower for only one sunny day, it’s a good reminder to me of the brevity of life. We all have just one shot at it living on this earth.

I will do well to make each day count while I can. Perhaps that is a reminder for you too. None of us are guaranteed tomorrow. If you are not sure how to have a relationship with the One Who created all this, and has the plan for the best life possible for you, please see Got God?

Hope you have a great day.
