Mountain Vapor and Clouds III

When I showed this picture to a friend who lives in Washington State, he remarked that the cloud formation reminded him a bit of when Mount St. Helens erupted. There are things we witness in life that are deeply etched in our memories, even when decades have passed since the event.

Mount St. Helens is an active volcano on the western side of the Cascade Mountain range in Washington State. For many of us who were living in the Pacific Northwest at the time, May 26, 1980 is a date we instinctively associate with this mountain. At 8:32 am local time on that day, Mount St. Helens erupted, causing what some have called the most disastrous volcanic eruption in recorded U.S. history.

An estimated 57 people died from the eruption, and billions of dollars’ worth of damages occurred, both in manmade structures and in natural resources such as timber, wildlife, and fisheries. When the volcano erupted, Mount St. Helens was reduced in elevation by 1,314 feet (from 9,677 to 8,363). There was an estimated 540 million tons of ash lifted in the column of smoke during the eruption. It took 3 days for the ash to drift down on most of the US, and 15 days for it to circle the entire earth.

I took the above photo on a walkabout with my wife and Cosmos the Wonderdog. Fortunately for us, these were spectacular cloud formations lit by the sunset, and not a catastrophic volcanic eruption.

The above Scripture reminds us of God’s remarkable power in creation. We do well to remember who God is, and all He has shown us about Himself in His creation.
