Mountain Cathedrals II

Your mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the great mountains; Your judgments are a great deep; O LORD, You preserve man and beast. How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.  Oh, continue Your lovingkindness to those who know You, And Your righteousness to the upright in heart. Psalm 36:5-10

Mountains are referenced more than 200 times in the Bible. I didn’t know that until I recently did a word-search for them. They must be important in God’s scheme of things in that He would mention them that many times.

Above is an aerial photo of part of a mountain range not too far from our home. I wasn’t exactly sure of our location when I took this picture, but I think some of these peaks may be over 10,000 feet above sea level. Although elevation is a bit difficult to determine from just a two dimensional view, the heavy snowline gives us a clue as to where the relatively high country is.

God could have made everything flat and we’d have never known about mountains. Just a guess, but I think it was fun for Him to create them, along with everything else He made. I know it was/is good, simply because He said so!

Having been blessed to hike in, over, and around mountains like these, I know the pure vastness of it all can be breathtaking. Pictures are good, but until you’re in the midst of it, it’s hard to imagine the feeling. (And to imagine how easy it is to get turned around and be “a mite bit bewildered,” as Daniel Boone said).

The above Scripture speaks of God’s great faithfulness and righteousness, comparing them to the great mountains of His creation. He is that – faithful and righteous – and so much more. And yet He still hears and cares about each one of us, including you.

Amazing God.

Hope you have a great day.
