Chipmunk

Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God. God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. Therefore, as the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the LORD.” 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 NLT

Chipmunks are one of the smallest members of the squirrel family. Lately we’ve been seeing one around our home for the first time in over twenty years. Hopefully he will have a well-established nest by the fall and won’t decide to visit us inside our house come wintertime. I captured his picture as he was munching on a maple tree seed on our patio bench.

Chipmunks eat a variety of foods. Their primary diet consists of seeds, nuts, fruit, and various forms of plant matter. They will also eat mushrooms and insects. By the time the cold weather begins to set in, they search out items which will last through the winter. They have pouches in their cheeks which they can stuff with food. Then they carry it to their burrow and deposit it in a big food cache for the cold months.

Because they collect so many tree seeds, chipmunks play an important role in helping establish healthy forests. Chipmunks in the western part of the U.S. do not hibernate. They undergo what is called a period of torpor, sort of a semi-hibernation. They will wake occasionally during the winter to eat, then return to a long slumber.

The above Scripture speaks of the kind of people God chooses. Often it is not those the world says are popular or important, nor the powerful or wealthy. Seems He likes to empower the seemingly insignificant people who are humble enough to know they’re not much on their own. That way, when God does something through one of us ordinary folk, we know it wasn’t us who did it. It had to be God, and He gets all the glory.

I like that.

Hope you have a great day.
