Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day. – Genesis 1:31 NKJV
He has made everything beautiful and appropriate in its time. He has also planted eternity [a sense of divine purpose] in the human heart [a mysterious longing which nothing under the sun can satisfy, except God]–yet man cannot find out (comprehend, grasp) what God has done (His overall plan) from the beginning to the end. – Ecclesiastes 3:11 AMP
Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. – Psalm 90:12 NLT
Calypso orchids are the only species in the Calypso genus. It inhabits very specific sites, growing in moist soils where there is decaying leaf litter and wood. They are sensitive to disturbance of the earth, and actually depend on distinct fungi in the soil to grow. These orchids also require shade, and can sometimes be found in mature or old-growth fir forests.
As you can see, these amazing plants require stringent site requirements to grow. So it always makes for a special walkabout when I see one on a springtime hike.
And not only that, but it is extra special when a polar bear-like creature appears in the background when I look at my photos after I return home. Apparently Cosmos the Wonderdog decided to take a little break from our hike, and chose a place directly behind my camera shot to lie down. He seems to have an endless supply of ways to make me smile when we spend time together.
A Valuable Lesson
There is a lesson about this plant that I find of great value personally. The once-a-year individual blossom of a calypso orchid lasts only a week or two before it dies. That is why the above Scripture about realizing the brevity of life is something I try to be intentional about.
Wise words from a wise and loving God.
If you don’t know how you can have your own personal relationship with this God Who loves you beyond any words I could ever write, please see Got God?
Hope you have a great day.
