I know all the birds of the mountains, and the wild beasts of the field are Mine. Psalm 50:11
But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you; and the birds of the air, and they will tell you; Job 12:7
The winter wren is a secretive bird which lives in the deep mountains around us. They are really fast, and make for a tough photo opportunity. I have tried to get a good picture for years to no avail.
It seems no matter how many times I venture out, I see about one winter wren per year. I’m hoping this year will be different. Their song is pretty distinctive, so when I hear one I stop to get a bead on the little critter before it vanishes into the timber. To me, their full song is a glorious praise to their Creator.
These small birds like dense and tangled forest floors. The chance of seeing one is even greater if there is a stream nearby. They like to scramble about in the leaf litter, and can be spotted darting into dark crevices under rocks and logs. If you are ever in the woods and see what you think is a mouse zipping about in front of you, it may be a winter wren! Their scientific name actually means one who dwells in a cave.
These birds eat mainly insects and spiders. They will eat berries when preferred food is in short supply, such as in winter. They usually forage on the ground, on tree trunks and branches, and even eat bugs floating on the surface of a stream.
As secretive as these little birds are, it sure gives me enjoyment on the rare occasions when I see one. I just recently captured the above photo (out of about 20 blurs of brown!) and am grateful for the opportunity to share it with you.
As the above Scriptures note, there is a God Who made things like the winter wren, and a mind boggling myriad of other things as well. Not sure how to have a relationship with Him? Please see Got God?
Hope you have a great day.
