Turkey – Bird Brain

Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. – 1 Corinthians 13:12 NLT

Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. – 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

It is highly unlikely that turkeys will ever be given the Brightest Bird in the Flock award. The young male turkey (jake) in the above photo was absolutely mesmerized by its own reflected image in the side of this black car.

Cosmos the Wonderdog and I were on a walkabout through our neighborhood recently, and saw this wild bird staring at the side of the car as we strolled past. After we walked a few steps further, we heard tapping and pecking. I turned to see the turkey whacking its beak against the side of the car, apparently wanting to challenge the bird in the image who would dare stand up to him!

We tried to scare the turkey off from where we were standing, but to no avail. So, with Cosmos in tow, we walked up to the large bird as he continued pecking at the car. Despite shouting and waving my arms, the bird was oblivious to us. As you can tell by the picture, we got rather close before it ever did notice.

I’m not sure who owns this car, but I reckon they might appreciate me and Cosmos coming to the rescue and running the bird off before it dented and scratched the door any more than it already had.

According to the truth in the above Scriptures, sometimes the things we see are not what they appear to be. Just like this jake turkey, we can spend a lot of time and effort on things that don’t really matter. What a waste, not to mention the damage that can be done in the process. And had it been a bobcat or cougar coming up on this turkey while it was stuck in its delusion, rather than the golden Cosmos, things might not have turned out too well for this bird.
