At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You, Because of Your righteous judgments. Psalm 119:62
Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul, And fills the hungry soul with goodness. Psalm 107:8-9
in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
As best I can tell without hiring a lawyer to interpret the hunting regs, it is now open season for wild turkeys in my neck of the woods. Thanksgiving is also here once again. Yet when I looked out my kitchen window a few mornings ago, I saw the above turkey-antics taking place.
Both of the turkeys pictured above are young males, called jakes. They are one-year-old birds. You can see the difference pertaining to wear-and-tear in tail feathers of these young birds vs some older males (see Thanksgiving V).
There were a few hens under our kitchen window the morning I took this picture, and the jakes were prancing about, trying (in vain) to impress the ladies. Where I live, breeding season for these birds occurs in the springtime, around April. Sometimes turkeys around our home can act pretty goofy. Actually, most all of the time.
But for many folks, they do make for a fine Thanksgiving Day meal.
Thanksgiving – being thankful, is an interesting concept. I recently read some findings from a doctor who studied human brain-scans. About thirty years’ worth of research. And he found that if people are thankful, their brains are further developed, they are healthier, and they make wiser, better decisions in life compared to those who are fearful, angry, and unthankful.
I don’t know about you, but I want to make wise decisions in life.
Who’d have thought that being thankful could help me with that?
God.
Notice the verses on thanksgiving noted above. There are many in the bible. But just these few show us that it is even God’s will for us to be thankful. To help understand how to have a relationship with this Creator of the universe, please see Got God?
I hope you get to experience lots of the outdoors this fall. And may you have a peaceful and thankful Thanksgiving wherever you live.
