Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! – Psalm 46:10
There is more than one reason we see vivid colors in a sunset or sunrise. The sun’s light must pass through a greater thickness of the atmosphere when the sun is low on the horizon vs when it is overhead. During a sunset, such as the one pictured above, light from the sun is dispersed or scattered in the earth’s atmosphere.
The shorter wavelengths of light – found in blue and violet colors – are subject to a higher degree of dispersion relative to the longer wavelengths of light – yellow, red, and orange colors. This causes these longer wave lengths to be more readily seen by our eyes as we view the event.
It is little wonder to me that the above verse often comes to mind as I view a spectacular sunrise or sunset. It gives me a chance to reset things in my heart and mind. I hope it does the same for you too.
Be still.
And know.
