For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest. Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 NLT
About twenty years ago, it was rare to see a turkey in our backyard. When I would see one, I’d study it as it sauntered into the brush. Now we often see flocks of twenty or more birds in our neighborhood. The turkey shown above is a male in full display to attract a mate. I took the picture this week from my kitchen window. It was raining at the time, and before I had to reduce the resolution to fit my website, I can see beads of water on his tail.
I think Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be designated our national bird, at least in part, due to the red, white, and blue colors displayed by the male.
I hope you have the opportunity to hear a turkey gobble at some point in your life. I don’t know of anything in the wild which sounds quite like it. Turkeys seem to be a bit keyed up in the spring – I hear them gobble at the sound of thunder, my truck door closing, or even when I clap my hands.
In my part of the world, there is only a short window of time each year to see a male turkey strut about as in the picture above. Except for breeding season, both genders are unspectacular in appearance, mostly various shades of grey and brown. However, as you can tell by the photo, the males put on quite a display during the springtime breeding season.
King Solomon wrote the above Scripture under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. That was about 950 years before Christ. From the small snippets of life that I’ve seen in my wanderings to and fro, it seems the Bible is correct again.
Imagine that!
Have a great spring.
