Snow Squirrel

For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.  Isaiah 55:10-11

Sometime around Thanksgiving we like to head off into the mountains and find a Christmas tree. On certain tracts of public land we are allowed to cut a couple of trees each year for free. We try to make it a bit of a tradition, complete with Star the Wonderdog capering here and there in the snow as she searches for treasures of her own.

When we find the right tree, we pack it back down the mountain, where it adorns our home for several weeks during the Christmas season. And even when it’s time to put away the decorations for another year, our tree still has a lot of value. I don’t know if the backyard wildlife get much out of seeing all the colored lights on the tree while peering in through the windows, but they seem to really like the view from it once we put it outside.

I stick the tree in a bucket of water and prop it up so we can enjoy it a while longer. I make sure I place it far enough away from our birdfeeders so that the ever-scheming squirrels can’t reach them with even the most daring of leaps. But we still toss some sunflower seeds into the tree for whoever might come by.

The above pictured squirrel didn’t seem to mind too much that there was snow on his head. At least not as long as he had some nourishment within his grasp.

My wife and I have witnessed some amazing things when folks receive their very own copy of God’s Word  – the Word that goes forth from the mouth of God – as He puts it in the opening Scripture at the top of this page. We’ve seen young people holding their new Bibles up high over their heads as their smiles light up the room. They are ecstatic to receive a copy of the Word for their very own. And we’ve seen large, burly men weep as they open their Bibles for the first time.

The Word of God is an amazing blessing in my life. If I start my day off without reading it, things just seem to spiral downward from start to finish. I need the Word to nourish my soul. I hope you find time to read it every day as well.

Have a great day.
