Salmon Spawning V

Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD! Psalm 150:6 NKJV

Well, it’s that time of year once again, and I can’t seem to help taking some pictures of these remarkable fish (and a remarkable dog this time too). It is sometimes difficult to get a perspective on just how shallow the water can be where these kokanee salmon spawn.

To get to this particular place, we had to wade across a fairly large stretch of river. Actually, I waded whilst Cosmos opted to swim most of the way. Since this area gets little human disturbance because it is a bit difficult for people to access, there is often a bald eagle or an osprey perched in a nearby tree. Most of the time they remain in their tree even as Cosmos and I arrive. The big birds mostly ignore us and study the salmon for their next meal as the fish dig their nests – called redds – in the gravel and lay their eggs.

Many of the dark spots in the above picture are kokanee salmon. There were hundreds of fish spawning in this area when we got there. To see a close-up picture of one of these kokanee, see Salmon Spawning IV.

As I’ve mentioned before, there are times when I come upon a school of these kokanee in their orange and green spawning colors and simply watch, not even bothering to make a cast of my fly. It seems from this picture that Cosmos too is a bit captivated by all the fish swimming around him. At moments like these it would be difficult for me not to praise the Creator of the universe.

Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD!

If you are not sure how to have a relationship with this Creator of the universe, please see Got God?

Hope you have a great day.
