Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free… Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. “And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. Unless the weather is really nasty, any opportunity to get outside usually appeals to me. That is one reason I like the Fourth of July. And although I’m not much for loud noises, I do like to see the spectacular colors of fireworks against the jet-black sky.
Independence Day in the United States, also called the Fourth of July or July 4th by many, is the annual celebration of nationhood. It observes the finalization of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.
The actual vote by Congress for independence from Great Britain took place on July 2, but the process of revising the Declaration of Independence wasn’t completed until two days later. The significance of this event was lost on me for a lot of years, and still is for many who live in the US.
The fact that freedom is important in the eyes of the world is obvious. One only has to look at the global struggle of nations for power and control to see how significant freedom is. And that’s just on a human level.
Considering the words of Jesus in the above passage, freedom is obviously very important in the eyes of God as well. Since all of us have sinned, the loss of freedom affects us all regardless of where we live.
Knowing the truth about something helps us make better decisions in life. And knowing the truth about sin and forgiveness is of utmost importance to God as His Word (the Bible) clearly states. If you don’t know what God says about it and how this affects you personally, please see Got God?
Hope you will consider where you can find true freedom. And may you have a peaceful Fourth of July.
