Elk Bones – Dust to Dust

Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person. – Genesis 2:7 NLT

By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.” – Genesis 3:19 NLT

When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. – Romans 5:12 NLT

For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are. Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. – Romans 8:19-21 NLT

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. – John 10:10 NIV

Hiking in the springtime can reveal a lot about what has happened to certain animals over the cold, snowy winter. Pictured above is what is left of an elk that, for whatever reason, did not survive to see the warm days of spring and summer.

I don’t know the cause of death for this elk. Bears and wolves have enough power in their jaws to break the thick leg bones pictured here, as they eat them primarily for the nutrients calcium and phosphorus. But since these bones are intact, it’s possible that no bear or wolf came across this carcass, or was involved with the elk’s demise.

The events of Genesis chapter 3 in the Bible did not turn out well for Adam and Eve, nor for all of mankind. God banished the first man and woman from the Garden of Eden due to their sin, and told them that all mankind was now destined to return to the dust from which they were created. This was when death first came to the earth.

But there is good news. As the passage from Romans 8 states above, there is coming a day when death and decay will be done away with.

And Jesus makes a rather remarkable statement noted in the last Scripture above. He states that the thief (satan) comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. But that He, Jesus, came to give us a full life. Only Jesus could make such a statement, because only Jesus has the power to fulfill it.

Life to the full, or abundant life, as some translations state it, sounds pretty appealing to me. If you’re not sure how to go about having this for yourself, please see Got God?

Hope you have a great day.
