Deer and the Weather II

How amazing are the deeds of the LORD! All who delight in him should ponder them.  Psalm 111:2 NLT

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see–such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. Colossians 1:15-17 NLT

Deep snow in the high country can bring lots of changes for the wildlife living there. Pictured above are a couple of whitetail deer on a mountainside not far from our home.

Heavy snow can weigh down branches of trees and other plants, bending them low to the ground. When this happens, a food source becomes attainable for the deer where it was previously inaccessible. This can also occur when the surface of the snow becomes glazed over, allowing the deer to walk on top of the snow and reach higher into the overhanging branches. Click here to see a photo of a deer in the snow reaching into the trees for some twigs to browse on: Deer Stretch.

When the snow becomes extremely deep, deer and elk will often migrate to lower elevations in order to survive. Moose (the largest member of the deer family), tend to stay up high and tough it out. Sometimes these different strategies of survival work out well for the various species, sometimes not so much. A lot depends on the weather, along with the types and numbers of predators in the area.

Of course, all the cycles of the seasons and various survival adaptations of different animals and plants were going on long before I arrived on the scene to learn about and ponder them. Many times, I just have to step back in awe of the One Who created all this. And not only created it, which is mind boggling enough, but Who holds it all together.

For those who believe the bible, there is coming a time when this Jesus, Who holds all things together, is coming back. When that time comes, it will be too late to get right with God. That needs to be done before His return, or before we die and meet Him face to face. Not sure how to get right with God? Please see Got God?

Hope you have a great day.
