God is Not Fair

The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. Acts 2:20

I heard this statement recently as someone spoke about God and His mercy: “God is not fair”. I had to think about that a bit, and I after pondering it a while, I’ve come to a conclusion.

The person who said it is right.

I have read in the Bible where God said that everyone has sinned. If I’m honest I know I have. In addition, although I’ve travelled a bit and met many people, I haven’t met a smidgeon of all the people in the world. Nevertheless, I have to say that of all the people I have dealt with in life, best I can tell, they’ve all sinned too. That’s especially obvious once I get to know them, and vice-versa.

God said that what we earn, the wages of our sin, is death – eternal separation from Him forever. That sounds like hell to me. So if I’ve sinned, and I have, and what I earn from this sin is hell according to God’s viewpoint, then that’s where I belong when I die.

     Hell forever.

     Not good.

When I consider the meaning of the word holy, as in Holy God, that would be fair.

     But God…

Important words, those last two. Life changing, really. But God made a way where man had no way. He sent His only Son Jesus to die a horrific death on a cross and take the hell that I deserve so I don’t have to. Jesus did it so I don’t have to.  You don’t have to, either.

This Jesus Who never sinned took my sin and the punishment for my sin upon Himself so that I could have my sin forgiven and I wouldn’t have to take the punishment for it. On top of that, He promised His Holy Spirit to me if I’d repent of, (confess and turn away from), my sin, and believe in Him. Since the time I chose to do this, I have a tremendous, invaluable Helper as I go through this life.

It appears that God’s love for you and me made a way for us to be forgiven. He made a way for us to be right with Him forever even though we’ve sinned against Him and don’t deserve to be forgiven.

His mercy doesn’t sound fair to me. It overwhelms and surpasses it.

And I am so very grateful.

His mercy is as available to you as it is me. Just call out to Jesus and you’ll see.

Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

It’s like the Newsboys say: “When we don’t get what we deserve, it’s a real good thing…When we get what we don’t deserve, it’s a real good thing…” Yes!
